Safer e-hailing for women: features that actually help

Many women in South Africa think twice before booking a ride, especially at night. That worry is real, and it is fair.

No app can promise that nothing will ever go wrong. But the right features and a few good habits can make every trip safer. Here is what to look for.

1. Women driver preference

Some women simply feel more at ease with a woman driver. On Loop, you can turn on women driver preference. When women drivers are nearby, you will be offered them first.

2. Live trip sharing

Send your trip to a friend, partner or family member. They can see where you are on a map in real time, and when you arrive. On Loop, the link opens in any browser and you can send it on WhatsApp.

3. Someone watching with you

You should not be the only one watching the route. On Loop, our team keeps an eye on every trip. If something doesn't look right, we check in with you and ask if everything is OK.

4. Extra safety tools on every trip

Loop has more safety tools built into the trip screen, beyond the SOS button. Take a minute on your first ride to see what's there, so you know where to find them if you ever need them.

5. Quiet rides

Not in the mood to chat? Ask for a quiet ride. Your driver will know you would rather not talk. No awkward small talk needed.

6. In-app chat

You can message your driver in the app to sort out the pickup. There is no need to share your personal number.

7. SOS

Loop has an SOS button on every trip. One tap alerts our support team with your trip details and location.

In an emergency, always call 10111 or 112 first. SOS is a support alert, not a replacement for emergency services.

Good habits for every trip

Features help most when you pair them with a few habits:

• Check the plate before you get in.
• Let the driver say your name first.
• Sit in the back.
• Keep your phone charged and your location on.
• Never take an off-app trip, even if it is cheaper.
• Trust your gut. If something feels off, end the trip in a safe, busy place.

Checked drivers matter

Every Loop driver sends their ID, a selfie, their driver's licence and licence disc, and passes a background check before they can go online. Riders rate every trip, and our team reviews every report.
